Flammable Solids, Substances Liable to Spontaneous Combustion, and Substances Which, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable Gases

  • Class 4 has 3 Divisions
    o 4.1 Flammable Solid
    o 4.2 Spontaneously Combustible
o 4.3 Substances Which, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable Gases (Dangerous When Wet)
  • 4.1 Flammable Solid
    o Readily combustible
o Liable to cause or contribute to a fire through friction
o Solid desensitized explosives which may explode if not diluted sufficiently
o Desensitized through wetting with water or alcohols or diluted with other substances
o Packing Group Criteria can be found in TDGR 2.22 (1
  • 4.2 Spontaneously Combustible
o Self-heating substances that when in large amounts (kilograms), spontaneously ignite on contact with air for long periods (hours or days)
o Pyrophoric substances that even in small quantities, ignite within 5 minutes after coming into contact with air
o Packing Group Criteria can be found in TDGR 2.22 (2)
  • 4.3 Substances Which, in Contact with Water, Emit Flammable Gases (Dangerous When Wet)
o When in contact with water are likely to spontaneously ignite
o Prone to emitting dangerous quantities of flammable gases
o Packing Group Criteria can be found in TDGR 2.22 (3)
