Class 6 – Toxic and Infectious Substances

- Class 6 is divided into 2 divisions
- 6.1 Toxic Substances
o Substances likely to cause death, serious injury or harm to human health if swallowed, inhaled or comes into contact with human skin
o Further separated into Packing Groups based on the degree of toxicity (TDGR 2.29)
- 6.2 Infectious Substances
o Primarily separated into Categories A and B, but consult TDGR 2.36 for further classification
o Category A
– an infectious substance that is transported in a form such that, when it is released outside of its means of containment and there is physical contact with humans or animals, it can cause permanent disability or life-threatening or fatal disease to humans or animals
– Refer to TDGR Part 2 Appendix 3

— Infectious substance, affecting animals à UN2900
o Category B
– an infectious substance that does not meet the criteria for inclusion in Category A. [Cultures must be assigned to UN2814 or UN2900 as appropriate, TDGR 2.36 (2)]
— Biological substance, Category B à UN3373
– 24 hr # must be marked next to the PSN [TDG 1.39 (c)]
