Class 8 – Corrosives

  • Substances in liquid or solid form that can cause severe skin damage when in contact with living tissue or, in the case of leakage, will materially damage or even destroy other goods or the means of transport
  • Class 8 substances are assigned to one of the three Packing Groups based on human experience or laboratory tests
  • There are no Divisions for Class 8
  • Packing Group criteria TDGR 2.42:
    o Packing Group I (Most Hazardous) à corrosives that cause full thickness destruction of intact skin tissue in 3 minutes or less
    o Packing Group II (Moderately Hazardous) à corrosives that cause full thickness destruction of skin after an exposure time of more than 3 minutes but not more than 60 minutes (1 hour)
    o Packing Group III (Least Hazardous) à corrosives that cause full thickness destruction of skin after an exposure time of more than 60 minutes but not more than 4 hours (240 minutes) or
    Exhibit a corrosion rate that exceeds 6.25 mm per year at a test temperature of 55°C of steel or aluminum
