General
Before Dangerous Goods can be transported or offered for transport they must be classified. The Manufactures or those who create products containing dangerous goods, including the preparation or alteration of mixtures and solutions, must first do this.
Anyone who re-ships dangerous goods, thereby becoming the “consignor” is also responsible for its classification. Often, the shipping documents that accompanied the goods will have this information. Otherwise, it would be necessary to contact the manufacturer directly.
In some cases a “Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)” is sent out by the manufacturer or supplier with the goods. This should contain the necessary transport information or technical data that can then be used to determine the classification.
