500 kg Gross Mass Exemption

500 kg Exemption (TDGR 1.16):

The TDG Regulations do not apply to dangerous goods in transport solely on land on a road vehicle or railway vehicle if:

  • each shipment of dangerous goods is in a quantity less than or equal to 500 kg (1100 lbs) gross mass;
  • each means of containment (package) is 30 kg (66 lbs) or less gross mass;
  • each means of containment displays all required safety marks and hazard labels; and
  • each means of containment is accompanied by a document with only the primary hazard Class listed (following the word “Class”) then followed by the statement “number of means of containment” and a number

Goods prepared under the 500 kg exemption must never contain:

  • are in a quantity or concentration that requires an emergency response assistance plan
  • require a control or emergency temperature
  • Class 1 except for explosives included in Class 1.4S, or
    UN numbers UN0191, UN0197, UN0276, UN0312, UN0336, UN0403, UN0431, UN0453 and UN0493
  • Class 2.1 in a cylinder that has a water capacity greater than 46L
  • Class 2.3, Toxic Gases
  • Class 4 PG I
  • Class 5.2, unless they are limited quantities in accordance with TDGR 1.17
  • Liquids included in Class 6.1 PG I
  • Class 6.2 Infectious – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
  • Class 7 Radioactive and are required to be licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)
