Class 1 – Explosives

  • For definition, refer to TDGR 2.9, if applicable
  • Assigned to one of six divisions
    o Class 1.1, mass explosion hazard
    o Class 1.2, projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard
    o Class 1.3, fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or minor projection hazard or both but not a mass explosion hazard
    o Class 1.4, no significant hazard beyond the package in the event of ignition or initiation during transport
    o Class 1.5, very insensitive substances with a mass explosion hazard
    o Class 1.6,  extremely insensitive articles with no mass explosion hazard
  • For handling and stowage purposes, explosives are further separated into one of thirteen compatibility groups* which identify the kinds of explosives that are deemed to be compatible
  • The compatibility groups are: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, N and S (please refer to DR Table 3.1.A for detailed descriptions)
  • Explosives are named and described in Schedule 1 (they also appear in Schedule 3 – Alphabetical index TDG)
  • The consignor may use a classification that was determined by the Chief Inspector of Explosives, Department of Natural Resources. TDGR 2.2 (3) (a)
