  • Before Fully Regulated Dangerous Goods are given to a carrier for transport the consignor or shipper must prepare and provide a shipping document, or if the carrier agrees, an electronic copy of the shipping document. This applies to goods imported into Canada as well.
  • This provides a means of identification without actually looking directly at the shipment. For example, a carrier will know what is on-board a truck that has just arrived without opening the trailer doors.
  • Emergency response personnel can also use most of the information that appears on a shipping document. For instance, if a vehicle is involved in an accident or fire the information provided can tell police and firefighters whom to contact for more specific information.
