Shipping Name

The most specific shipping name for the product is selected from over 3000 names that appear in Schedules 1 & 3 of the Regulations.

  • Schedule 1 lists all of the shipping names in numerical order based on each substances corresponding UN number.
  • Alternatively, Schedule 3 is an alphabetical index of the shipping names and can be used to reference a product when the UN number is not known.
  • The shipping name for some dangerous goods is easy to find. Gasoline, Fire extinguishers and Mercury are examples of products that are listed alphabetically in Schedule 3 under their common names.
    1. Some items can be found under more than one name (but they share the same UN Number). You will find “DRY ICE” as well as CARBON DIOXIDE, SOLID” in the alphabetical list.
    2. Since you have to use the most accurate name that appears in the list, you must not describe a product by its trade name, such as Tilex. The manufacture or supplier could tell you that it is really a POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, SOLUTION.
